Does Insurance Cover Chiropractic in Canada? A 2025 Guide
Most Canadian extended health benefit plans cover chiropractic. Learn about provincial funding, what plans cover, and how to maximize your annual chiropractic benefit.
Chiropractic is covered by more Canadians health insurance plans than many people realize — but the details of what is covered, how much, and what documentation is needed vary by plan and province. Here is a clear guide to chiropractic insurance coverage in Canada for 2025.
Provincial Health Insurance and Chiropractic
Ontario removed chiropractic from OHIP coverage in 2004. BC delisted chiropractic from MSP. Most other provinces similarly do not provide provincial health insurance coverage for private-practice chiropractic. The exceptions are government employee benefit programs, WSIB (for work-related injuries in Ontario), and motor vehicle accident benefits. Saskatchewan provides limited provincial funding for chiropractic through the Saskatchewan Chiropractic Program for residents meeting certain criteria. Indigenous Services Canada covers chiropractic through the Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) program for eligible First Nations and Inuit.
Extended Health Benefit Plans
Most employer-sponsored group benefit plans in Canada include chiropractic coverage, typically with an annual maximum of $300 to $1,000 per person. Sun Life, Manulife, Canada Life, Green Shield, Blue Cross, and Desjardins all provide chiropractic benefits in their standard group plans. Some plans require a physician referral before coverage begins; most do not. Direct billing by chiropractic clinics to major Canadian insurers is widely available, allowing you to pay only the amount above your annual maximum at point of service.
Maximizing Your Chiropractic Benefits
Strategies to get the most from your chiropractic benefit: (1) Check whether your plan has a combined paramedical maximum (shared with massage, osteopathy, acupuncture) or separate maximums for each discipline; (2) Begin treatment in January to access a full annual maximum for the calendar year; (3) Confirm whether your plan covers X-rays ordered by a chiropractor; (4) Ask about Health Spending Account (HSA) options if your employer offers flexible benefits — chiropractic qualifies as a CRA-approved medical expense; (5) If injured at work, file a WSIB claim to preserve your benefit maximum for other uses.
