What Is a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) in Canada?
RMTs in Canada are regulated health professionals who treat musculoskeletal conditions through therapeutic massage. Learn about their training, what they treat, and how to find one.
In Canada, a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) is a regulated health professional trained in the assessment and treatment of soft tissue and joint dysfunction through therapeutic massage. Unlike unregulated massage practitioners, RMTs complete formal clinical training and are held to professional standards — which is why their services are covered by most extended health benefit plans. Here is what you need to know.
Regulation and Training of RMTs in Canada
RMTs in Canada must complete a recognized massage therapy program (2,200 hours of training in most provinces) and pass a licensing examination. In Ontario, registration is with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO). In BC, it is the College of Massage Therapists of BC (CMTBC). Not all provinces regulate massage therapy — Quebec, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island do not currently have formal regulation, though professional associations maintain voluntary standards. When choosing an RMT, confirming registration with the provincial college (where applicable) ensures you are seeing a credentialed professional.
What Conditions Can an RMT Treat?
Registered Massage Therapists in Canada assess and treat: muscle tension, soreness, and spasm; acute and chronic soft tissue injuries (strains, sprains, tendinopathy); postural imbalances and repetitive strain injuries; headaches and migraines; temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction; pregnancy-related discomfort including back pain and edema; stress, anxiety, and general wellness; post-surgical soft tissue rehabilitation; fibromyalgia and chronic pain conditions; and sports recovery. RMTs work in private practice, hospitals, sports medicine clinics, and spas.
RMT Insurance Coverage in Canada
Most extended health benefit plans in Canada cover Registered Massage Therapy, typically $300 to $1,000 per year. In provinces where massage therapy is regulated (Ontario, BC, Alberta, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, etc.), RMTs can provide receipts for insurance claims. In unregulated provinces, some plans cover massage only if provided by a practitioner with a specific credential (such as RMT or Canadian Certified Massage Therapist). Direct billing is available at many RMT clinics across Canada, eliminating upfront payment.
