WSIB and Physiotherapy in Ontario: What Injured Workers Need to Know
WSIB covers physiotherapy for Ontario workers injured on the job. Learn how to access WSIB-funded PT, what to expect, and how to find a WSIB-registered physiotherapist.
If you have been injured at work in Ontario, you may be entitled to physiotherapy through the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB). Understanding how WSIB-funded physiotherapy works — and how to access it quickly — is essential for a faster recovery and return to work. This guide explains the process for Ontario workers in 2025.
Does WSIB Cover Physiotherapy?
Yes — the WSIB covers physiotherapy for injured Ontario workers as a health care benefit under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act. If your claim is approved, WSIB pays directly for physiotherapy treatment at registered WSIB health care provider clinics. You do not pay out of pocket and the treatment does not come off your extended health benefit maximum. WSIB physiotherapy is primarily aimed at helping you recover function and return to work safely.
How to Access WSIB Physiotherapy
To access WSIB-funded physiotherapy in Ontario: (1) Report your injury to your employer and file a WSIB Form 6 (Worker Report of Injury). (2) Your employer files a Form 7. (3) Once your claim is accepted, contact a WSIB-registered physiotherapy provider. You do not need a doctor referral for physiotherapy — you can go directly. (4) The physiotherapist will complete the WSIB Functional Abilities Form and communicate with WSIB about your progress and return-to-work capacity. Timely access (within 48 hours for acute injuries) improves outcomes significantly.
WSIB-Approved vs Private Physiotherapy
WSIB-approved physiotherapy clinics are registered with the Board and bill WSIB directly at set fee schedules. Private physiotherapy clinics not registered with WSIB cannot bill the Board — you would pay out-of-pocket and attempt to claim reimbursement, which is more complicated. Confirm a clinic is WSIB-registered before booking for a workplace injury. Some clinics are registered for both private extended health and WSIB claims.
